“For Yahweh your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God” (Deuteronomy 4:23-24). Once a fire is started, its nature is to grow. It grows and consumes everything in sight. God is also a fire and His nature is to consume. Once the spark of the Holy Spirit is ignited in us, the fire will have to grow because it’s His nature. God created us like wood— to be consumed. So all are consumed but not all by God. Some are consumed with their career, or relationship and others consumed with themselves. But Deuteronomy 4:24 says that God is a jealous God. Like a spouse, God doesn’t want us to leave Him for other lovers— other passions. He wants us for Himself, as He created us for Himself to love. 1 Thessalonians 5:19 says, “Do not quench the Spirit''. God has given us free will so we can choose to love Him back. We have the choice to let the love of Jesus consume us— our purpose; or we can choose to leave Him for another. “No one can serve two masters” (Matthew 6:24). Life with Jesus is not about starting a fire by doing good deeds, but instead by surrendering to the consuming fire of God.
