Rebirth is an image of Jesus’s resurrection story in us. As Jesus died and rose up again, we as believers have gone through a spiritual death of our old selves and are born again as a new person. Jesus stated, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God” (John 3:3b). This rebirth of the spirit is represented through baptism in water. Rebirth illustrates a believer going into water as she is buried with Jesus, and coming out as she is resurrected with him. As this believer comes to God as herself, laying down her naked and vulnerable spirit before God, the Lord redeems her and washes her in the cleansing water of His blood. She is lifted out of this spiritual water by the hand of the Spirit of God and can now come face-to-face with the Living God, covered with the water of her second birth. “Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come” (2 Corinthians 5:17).
